Classic shapes and silhouettes - Technical file

For classic shapes and silhouettes I mean that I am going to describe step  step how to create a Sleek ponytail and the concept of Editorial hair. Starting analysing the sleek ponytail, this way of creating it will work also for those clients who have very thick hair as well and we usually struggle to make it look really sleek and trendy:

Tools:

  • Hair brush
  • Sea-salt spray
  • Tail comb
  • Hair bungees
  • kirby pin
  • Hairspray
How to:
  • Start with prepping the hair, because some people have really strong parting which will make the work a lot harder. So spray the hair with sea salt water and blow dry it directing the hair towards the part you want it to go.
  • Using your tail comb, section your hair into two sections. Take the section from the temple and bring it down. To measure the right point where you have to stop with the section, take the tail comb and visually create a section from the ear towards the top of the head, and this will give you the highest point(For a Fashion Sleek Ponytail). Once you found that position, at the back of your section bring the hair into a point and then up again to the other temple.
  • Take that piece of hair, twist it and pin it so that it doesn't disturb you when creating your hair style.
  • That point you have created at the top of the head is going to be the place where your ponytail is going to be. Then spray sea-salt onto the hair to help the hair to go in the direction you want to.
  • Using your brush start combing the hair directioning it towards the place where the ponytail is going to be.
  • Ask your model to bring their head back, it will ensure that the bottom part is not baggy, but nice and sleek as the rest of your hair.
  • Once you have gathered your hair into the position you wanted to, take your tail comb and help yourself to create a very sleek hair, by combing it again into that ponytail.
  • Using a hair bungee, place the first grip into the side of the ponytail, wrap the band around until it doesn't go any further and secure the grip into the hair.
  • Once your bottom part is done, move to the top sections. At this stage you can create a quiff, or keep it very sleek.
  • Spray it again with your product and start combing through.
  • Start blending the top section with bottom one, so that the parting from the temple is not seen.
  • Bring the top section after blended into that existing ponytail.
  • Using again a hair bungee, secure the hair into the ponytail.
  • You can straighten the ponytail at this level, it is going to be much more quicker and better for the hair, but before doing that, take a section of hair from underneath and wrap it around the ponytail and pin it with a kirby pin, hiding the pin and fix it with hairspray.

Creating a French Twist:

This French twist is a kind of a soft and natural Hairstyle:

Tools:
  • Curling Tongs
  • Tail comb
  • Kirby Pins
  • U-shaped pins
How to:

  • Take the crown section again, same as we have done earlier for the sleek ponytail, but instead of making it into an angle, you need to go flat at the back.
  • Again, section that part off, for the moment, in order to ease your work. Start curling the hair and think about the directions you want your hair to go. This will help with the  volume and the lift we want to achieve. Then all the curled section, is going to be back-combed.
  • Give a little bit of back combing to the crown section and start bringing it back. Before doing the twist, you select the crown sections and fix it with a kirby pin.
  • Then start from a side, using a brush and gently bring it to the back. It will blend smoothly with the crown part you have shaped earlier. Take this part slightly off centre, then take the kirby pins and you're going to place them from the bottom up into a line. The very last kirby pin, place it going down- This gives you a clean line and great finish.
  •  Then take your brush again.
  •  Do the same directing it to the back. Get all the hair into your hands and create a twist And using the U shaped pins, bring them in (putting them together like chop-sticks) and fix the hair.
  • Once you are happy with the shape you have created, manipulate the hair and style the twist.

Editorial Hair
For and editorial French twist, the technique is going to be the same more or less. The only difference is that the hair is going to be back-combed in a nearly exaggerated way and you will start the hairstyle by creating the twist first. With the top bit, you can create different shapes and the most important thing is that you have to create as much volume as possible. THIS IS THE SECRET OF THE EDITORIAL HAIR: The bigger- the better.
