Beach hair- Technical File

Beach hair- is a trend that we often see in advertisements and editorial photography, especially when summer is near! There are three ways of creating this amazing hairstyle:

 Tools:

  • Hair dryer with a diffuser
  • Mousse
  • Sea-salt spray
  1. This way of creating the beach hair is in case you washed the model's hair.
  2.  Add some mousse to the hair, from the middle length to the ends, just to help with natural curls of the hair.
  3. Spray the hair with sea-salt spray to give more texture to the hair. You're going to use much more that you used for the normal blow drying. you can ask your model to bring her/his head to the back and it will help you when blow drying with a diffuser, but don't make them stay with the head upside down for too long because this way the blood rushes to their head and they might even feel bad. Just be very aware of your model.
  4. if you are working on someone with processed hair, remember you cannot use full heat on their hair , because it will damage it more, but still use full power.
  5. Place the diffuser under the hair and move it in kind of circles. Move it around to separate the hair and create that nice beach hair. Also get really close to the roots when doing it.
  6. The hair is going to be very sticky at a certain point, but this is exactly what we want.
  7. Make sure that the hair is fully dry.
  8. Once you finished drying start styling it as you want. the styling part is as important as the drying one.
  9. Don't spray hairspray directly onto the hair because the hair has already a lot of product in it. Just apply a small amount on your hands and style the hair as wanted.

Tools:

  • Curling Tongs
  1. You are going to use the tongs as a wand, not as an actual tong.
  2. Take a large section of hair. If you are going to work with small sections, you'll have a lot of curls, but in this case we want waves
  3. Turn your tongs upside down... this way it will work more as a wand than as a tong
  4. Leave the ends out when creating the wavy hair, about an inch. keep it in between 8 to 10 second, but obviously depending on the heat you are using and on the hair you are working on.
  5. Don't touch them until they cooled down
  6. Once they cooled down, you are going to tease(pull) them and this is going to give you a nice wave instead of a curl

Tools:
  • Hair straighteners
  1. Some people like to plait the hair, but in this case we are going to twist the hair.
  2. So, take a section of the hair and twist it
  3. Next to it take another section of the hair and twist it too.
  4. Then twist these two sections together
  5. Leave the ends out
  6. Take the straighteners and using its heat, apply it onto that kind of plait. Move the straighteners around so that the heat arrives in every single part of the plait.
  7. Let it cool down
  8. Once it's cooled down, gently pull the apart and this will create nice spiral kind of curl

Practicing on lips

During a practical lesson we were asked to experiment different looks on the lips. As I didn't have a model I have done it on myself at the beginning. We had to start from creating natural look going into more dramatic lips. We also had to experiment with different ways of applying the lipstick, as for example, not only by using a brush, but also by tapping the colour with fingers.
I have started with natural lip look- I have contoured the lips with a natural colour of lip liner from L'Oreal and the I have applied the itStyle No.2 lipstick:

After that I have decided to add more colour to my lips :

Then I wanted to try a different way of applying the colour, so tapped red colour of lipstick onto my lips with my fingers:
To make them look more dramatic I have added a bit of black colour in the middle:
Full red lips:

Then I have added a bit of black in the centre:

Changing the look:

And my final look :

Gareth Pugh - Final decision

After doing my research when choosing the designer for the catwalk look, which was Alexander McQueen, I thought that the his Spring/Summer 2016 collection is not representing my ideas and understanding of Ellis Faas makeup style. So I continued with my research looking for avant-garde designers that would represent the chosen makeup brand's style. I have decided to choose the other epic designer Gareth Pugh. His Spring/Summer 2016 collection left me speechless.
Gareth Pugh is recognised worldwide for its extravagant and visionary fashion, and also for his approach to redefining modern luxury concept.
Born in Sunderland, having even worked since a young age at English National Youth Theatre as a costume designer, he began his studies in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins in London. He graduated in 2003. Noticed by magazine Dazed and Confused, got a cover and a place of honor in the exhibition of 2004 with his installation "Inflatable Creatable".
During an internship at the luxurious fur Rick Owens, meets the Parisian fashion consultant Michelle Lamy, with whom in 2006 he began a collaboration. Thanks to the advice of Lamy, the British designer take a luxurious way, introducing into his cashmere collections, leather and vision.
Gareth Pugh, for its extreme and theatrical aesthetic vision of fashion, is defined by some as the new Alexander McQueen. His collections are characterized by Gothic themes, forms and avant-garde cuts and dark colours. For every fashion show, the designer uses the able hands of Judy Blame, who creates precious jewels, which during catwalks accompany grandiloquent Pugh's models.

The Spring/Summer 2000 the show called "Eye" was his first show in New York and rumors of a million dollar budget, and models dangling from Brooklyn Bridge, circled the city. The committed arrived – a thousand in number – to be welcomed by a shallow pool of water which the show was held upon, models sprinkling as they strolled. The finale brought models drifting above what gave off an impression of being knifes developing point-first from the water, McQueen persistently motivated by death and haziness.

McQueen’s last indicate ever was, expectedly, revolutionary. Foreseeing an submerged world, after the liquefying of the polar ice caps, models were A large portion bionic A large portion mankind's – for gills In their temples Furthermore based dependent upon cheek bones. Woman Gaga’s new track “Bad Romance” premiered to those Initially period Throughout the finale and, in cooperation with scratch Knight, the show might have been show on An live crowd around the reality – making it those to start with live-streamed hint at clinched alongside style history. (Though Along these lines numerous individuals logged onto SHOWstudio to watch it, those website crashed. ).

Those scenes caught were anticipated onto a titan screen during those once more of the catwalk, turning the ticket of gathering of people Furthermore designer, and additionally the exclusivity of a design show, with respect to its head. Nothing might have been sheltered starting with McQueen critique, particularly the style industry. Live-streaming will be Right away commonplace, Be that over then it might have been a strikingly imaginative move.

Alexander McQueen- an explanation of his Style

In one of the Makeup & Hair for Fashion and Beauty sessions, we have to show a presentation based on our new project. In My presentation as an explanation to the question: "Why Ellis Faas?" I have replied: " Also the images that represents her brand are more of an avant-garde style for which I always had a particular attraction. What is unusual- is interesting and has always attracted my attention."
This is the exact reason I have chose Ellis Faas as brand for my research. It is different! It's particular not only through its designs, but also for its packaging and products. And there is a massive similarity with McQueen's character. From his shows you have always "to expect the unexpected!"

I have alway been Interested in unusual things, in what is considered strange, different, particular. What is different and weird for others, is original and interesting for me. Unusual things have always caught my attention. Strange people, unusual places, unusual hairstyles, hair colors, avant- garde makeup- this is my passion. Unusual is Unique! This is exactly what Alexander McQueen is showing through his collections and his shows! The audience doesn't know what to expect from his shows.  Through his shows he has always challenged our perceptions! He broke the rules and this is what makes him unique. He has a great sense of drama and this is very noticeable in his collections!

Analysing Alexander McQueen's Spring/Summer 2016 collection & Hair and Makeup

Sarah Burton is the official creative director of Alexander McQueen. For the Spring/Summer 2016 collection, she was inspired by history. To be more specific, she was inspired by the English folklore and the 17th century artisans.

Old stories has for quite some time been rich ground for the brand, with McQueen himself drawing on their gothic, hypnotizing nature for accumulations, for example, The Girl Who Lived in a Tree, his own dream story of a young lady dropping from the tree in his greenery enclosure to wind up a princess. With surging botanical fabric and flushed, English rose cheeks, this current season's dreams additionally had a touch of the fable courageous woman. Dresses were done off with the minor catches and cross charms you may pull from a velvet-lined knickknack box.As is to be envisioned with a McQueen gathering, there was an insight of dim sexuality – models wore subjugation style body chains finished with pearls that looked like dew drops on spiderwebs.

"There's a bohemian class, a brilliant crudeness," said cosmetics craftsman Lucia Pieroni, who was conjuring flushed cheeks and sparkling skin utilizing a ClĂ© de Peau BeautĂ© cream redden and MAC Strobe Cream as a highlighter. "It's that warm pink you get from strolling, the slight rosiness of the cheek," she said. "You don't appear as though you're wearing cosmetics; you simply look astonishing."
So the makeup was very natural giving the sense of youthness, of freshness and tenderness.

Hair styling:

Guido Palau was additionally thinking about something more "touchable, womanly, genuine." He and Burton had been taking a gander at pictures of dozed in hair in foresight of the appear. To re-make those same strange defects for the runway, he was impacting the hair with Redken Windblown splash and afterward assembling it into sentimental spirals utilizing a genuine needle and undetectable string.

"You know when you're sewing something on a machine and after that you pull the string and the entire thing ruches? That is what we're doing to the hair," he clarified.

Concerning that hair-weaving procedure, Palau said it can be interpreted into a night motion by just tying the hair back with a bit of sparkling gold fiber. Ideal for night, he said with a twinkle, "or—who knows?— even your wedding."

Choosing a designer- Alexander McQueen

For this project we have to create 2 catwalk looks. As I have chosen as makeup brand Ellis Faas, a brand that is just for makeup and not a brand like Dior or Chanel that creates clothing as well, I had to choose a designer For whom I'd create the makeup for the Spring/Summer 2016 collection.
After doing some research and trying to find makeup similarities in the runways makeup for avant-garde designers I have decided to go for Alexander McQueen. His legendary collections, Runways shows and even his Fashion films, fascinates me incredibly, and inspire me with different ideas.

Alexander McQueen was born in London on March 17th, in 1969. He was the youngest of six children. He left school at the age of 16 and was offered an apprenticeship at the Traditional Savile Row Tailors Anderson and Shephard. From that point he moved to the dramatic costumiers Angels and Bermans, where he comprehended sharp customizing which has turned into a signature for McQueen. His shows are known for their enthusiastic force and crude vitality and also the sentimental yet firmly contemporary nature of the accumulations. Indispensable to the McQueen society is the juxtaposition between differentiating components: delicacy and quality, convention and innovation, ease and seriousness. Alexander's accumulations join an inside and out working learning of bespoke British customizing, the fine workmanship of the French Haute Couture atelier and the flawless completion of Italian assembling.
In under 10 years McQueen got to be a standout amongst the most regarded style architects on the planet.

To show better the similarities between the styles of both Alexander McQueen and Ellis Faas, I have created like a moodboard in which I have attached images of makeup created by Ellis and makeup used in McQueen's shows:

So I believe that there is a lot of similarities between their styles and their ideas. I would say that Ellis' work compared to the makeup used in McQueen's shows, is softer and gives a sense of tenderness. A harsher touch is noticed in McQueen's designs.

Technical file- Braids & Plaits

For a very long time I believed that a braid and a plait is the same thing. Now I have discovered that between these two words there is a difference: A Braid - is situated against the scalp, while a Plait- is a free hanging plait.

During a practical hair session we learned how to create 5, 8 and 11 strand plait. here is the step-by-step.

  • Divide the hair in 3 sections. From the middle parting downwards the ears and the same on the other side.
  • The section at the beck divide it in 5 strands
  • Start with the first strand to put it over the second strand and then under the strand Nr 3.
  • On the other side, put the 5th strand over the strand 4 and then under the strand in the middle which is the strand 1 in this case.
  • Continue in the same way until your plait is ready
  • Tie it tight
To create an 8 strand plait:

  •  Take one section you left on a side and divide it in 3 strands.
  • Start a normal plait where the strand 1 goes over the strand 2 and under the strand 3.
  • Then insert the strand 1 over the outer strand that is on the 5Strand plait.
  • Continue this way until you have a 8 strand plait
For an 11 strand plait do the same with the section left on the other side.

  • Divide it in 3 and using the same procedure from the 8 strand plait, create an 11 strand plait.

After the plaits we did the Dutch braid: It is essentially a French braid, but inside out.
  • In other words, it’s the very same technique you’ve likely already mastered, but instead of crossing sections over the top, you slip them underneath.
  • Grab a piece of hair from the top of your head. Split the section you grabbed into three strands for braiding
  • Cross the right strand under the center strand.
  • Cross the left strand under the centre strand.
  • Repeat the pattern and cross the right strand, then the left strand, under the center strand.
  • Cross the right strand under the center, and pick up another small section from the right side of your head.
  • Cross the left strand under the center, and pick up another small section from the left side of your head.
  •  Add more hair to your braid by picking up small strands every time you cross pieces under the center strand.

Waterfall Braid:
  • Separate your hair into your first section that is near the forehead.
  • Separate your first section of hair into three equal parts.
  • Start braiding as usual, as a normal 3 strand braid.
  • Add more hair into the braid outside of the three original portions of hair you started with.
  •  Let go of the right portion of hair so it hangs and drops down normally.
  • Here starts the waterfall effect. So continue in the same way until you want your braid to finish.
